Mashona (Shona) Washington is the youngest of 5 siblings to be introduced to the game of tennis by her Father William A. Washington at the age of 3.  She won her first title at 10.
 
Mashona impacted the Black community around the world as a constant presence on the WTA Tour as one of a few players of color from the United States during her time on tour.  She had a professional tennis career that spanned 15 years. 
 
As a junior player Mashona won numerous local and state titles in Michigan.  She won the 1992 Girl's 18 Indoor National Championship at the age of 16, and was a finalist at the U.S. National Hardcourt and U.S. Indoor National Girl's 16's in 1991.

Mashona turned professional in 1995 and during her career she reached the finals of 12 USTA/ITF singles tournaments winning 2 titles and she reached 26 doubles finals, winning 15 titles.  She reached her first WTA Tour level final in singles and doubles in 2004, later that year she would reach her career high ranking of #50 in singles and #55 in doubles respectively.  She was a member of the United States Federation Cup Team in 2005 & 2007 and was a member of 3 World Team Tennis Teams, Houston Wranglers, Washington Kastles, and the Boston Lobsters.  Mashona has also been a commentator for Tennis Channel.
 
For 28 consecutive years Mashona has participated in annual fundraisers with the MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation.  The Foundation promotes tennis, life skills and educational programs in Jacksonville, Florida.

Mashona is currently the Assistant Director of Racquet Sports at a private club in Houston, Texas.  She is also a licensed Realtor in two states, Texas and Florida, and is a 2 time Chevron Houston Marathon finisher.
