Marvin is an accomplished Black business owner and tennis professional with over 20 years of experience in the Tennis industry. Marvin is the Owner and Founder of Slammer Tennis World; he founded Slammer Tennis World in April 2003 to motivate and educate people thru the game of tennis. On the tennis
court, he developed the nickname “Slammer” for his ability to slam any lob that was put up in the air. Through the years this nickname stuck with Marvin and became the ideal name for his company. Marvin is a PTR Certified Tennis Teaching Professional who earned his certification at the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR)/Dennis Van De Meer Tennis University in Hilton Head, SC. Marvin has been teaching tennis for over 20 years and have taught many kids that went on to play high school and college tennis. Some of the players he taught and mentored played in USTA/ATA tournaments and played the #1 spot on their high school tennis teams. Before starting his own tennis company in 2003, he worked at CPG Architects/Link Systems for 15 years. Slammer Tennis World had several tennis program locations in New Canaan, Norwalk and Stamford, CT for over 17 years. • Marvin is a lifetime member of the American Tennis Association (ATA)
• Slammer Tennis World was the first black owned tennis company to offer an indoor junior tennis program at the Stamford, CT YMCA from April 2004 to October 2006.
• Slammer Tennis World is an organization member of USTA New England and Florida
• Marvin is a certified USTA tournament director for New England and Florida
• Served as the Director of Tennis for the City of Norwalk, CT Recreation and Parks from 2009 to 2016
• Won first place in the Fairfield County USTA Mixed Doubles League in 2002
• Won first place in the New England Tennis Association (N.E.T.A) mixed doubles tournament in July 2005
• Was a finalist in the American Tennis Association (ATA) National Men’s 40 Doubles Championship in San Diego, CA
• Board member of the New England Tennis Association (NETA) in 2005
• A top tennis pro (James Blake), who was ranked in the top 10 in the world, visited Slammer Tennis World’s summer tennis camp at Scalzi Park in Stamford, CT in July 2006
• Elected as Vice-President of the New England Tennis Association (NETA) in 2008, and was chosen as the delegate/ambassador to attend the ATA national tournaments and ATA national meetings in 2008 and in 2009
• Received the Men of Distinction award from the NAACP of Dutchess County, NY in 2007
• Slammer Tennis World received the Community Tennis Association (CTA) award of the year from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) New England in 2008

• Marvin was featured on the front cover of the January/February 2017 edition of the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) magazine.
• Slammer Tennis World expanded to Florida in 2018 and now offers tennis programs to kids and Adults in Land O’ Lakes, FL. Both group and private tennis lessons are offered to kids and Adults.
• Marvin has hosted free tennis jamborees in his hometown of Emporia, VA for the past six years.
• In October 2016, Marvin received a proclamation from the then Mayor of Emporia, VA, Mary L. Person, and a plaque from the then City Clerk of Emporia, Bobby Wren for his service and contributions to his hometown
of Emporia, VA
• In October 2022, Marvin raised money to refurbish the tennis courts at the Community Youth Center (CYC) in his hometown of Emporia; the tennis courts had not been touched or repaired in over 40+ years. The
Community Youth Center is located in the Black area of Emporia, VA and is where most of the Black children went to for after-school programs
• In October 2022, Thelma Atkins-Riley, President of the Community Youth Center in Emporia, VA named the tennis courts at the Community Youth Center (CYC), The Marvin Tyler tennis courts in his honor. He is the first
African-American to have tennis courts named after him in his hometown of Emporia, VA
• In October 2022 Marvin also received another proclamation from the current Mayor of Emporia, VA, Dr. Carolyn Carey for his
time/contributions, and for revitalizing the tennis courts at the Community Youth Center (CYC) in Emporia, VA
• Was chosen by the PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) to be the visiting Tennis Pro and Ambassador of tennis from the U.S. to teach at Couples Resort in Jamaica in May 2025.
Personal Interests:
Marvin was born in Emporia, VA, but was raised and grew up mostly in Brooklyn, NY since he was 9 years old and has never forgotten where he came from. Outside of his professional life, Marvin resides in Tampa, FL, and has been
married to his wife Terri for 34 years. I have a daughter, Whitney and a son Marvin Jr, and two grandsons, Elijah and Kayden. I enjoy playing and teaching tennis, and going to the beach whenever possible, and playing a pickup game of basketball every now and then. Every year, I give back my hometown of Emporia, VA and host a free tennis jamboree for the kids in the community. I believe in giving back to the community and fostering positive change both within and outside my professional sphere. My slogan is that I motivate and educate people
through the game of Tennis!
