Responsible for the overall financial well being of the tennis facility

Responsible for the maintenance of eight har tru outdoor courts

Hire, train and supervise two tennis professionals and four desk/maintenance personnel

Do employee performance appraisals, payroll and budget

String and repair all rackets

Organize and direct all tournaments. From 2006-2019, was the volunteer tournament director for the large Big Brothers/Big Sisters Tournament of the Triad, which proceeds went to the BBBS organization

 

2000-2005

Western Michigan University’s West Hills Athletic Club

Responsible for the overall financial well being of the tennis facility

Increased tennis revenues from $283,000 (2000) to $425,000 (end of fiscal year 2004)

Hire, train and supervise two assistant directors, one head pro, and six associate pros

Maintain a weekly average of 24 on court teaching hours that includes working with five Adult USTA Travel

Teams (2.5-4.5) and working and traveling with sectionally and nationally ranked junior players

Promote, organize and direct all sanctioned and non-sanctioned tennis tournaments using TDM, including

the 2004 WMTA Junior Qualifier that attracted over 320 players.

SHORT BIO

  • Started playing tennis at age 11 at the Byrd Park Tennis Courts
  • Played on one of the first NJTL (National Junior Tennis League) teams created by Arthur Ashe, and won the team national championships at Forest Hills, New York in 1969.
  • Played high school tennis at Huguenot High School and won the state singles and doubles championships
  • First black to receive a full tennis scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • Won 4 ACC championships
  • First (and only) black to win the Richmond City Championships (two times), the Virginia State Championships, and the Mid-Atlantic Championships
  • Played on the professional tour for 5 years, reaching a high of top 200 in the world in singles and top 100 in the world in doubles, having competed against players such as Vitas Gerulaitis, Jimmy Connors, and John McEnroe.
  • Coached and traveled with over 65 nationally ranked juniors, many of whom have gone on to attend universities such as Alabama, Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State, UVA, VCU on tennis scholarships.
  • In 2015, I was selected by the USTA as one of the top 50 black coaches/teaching pros in the US to attend a high-performance coaching workshop in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in December 2015. Other notable attendees: Mal Washington (former Wimbledon finalist), Chip Hooper (former top 20 ATP), Katrina Adams (former top 20 player WTA and former president & CEO of USTA)
  • From September 29, 2017-October 1, 2017, I attended the USTA Player Development Coach Mentoring Workshop in Orlando, Florida. 24 experienced pros were matched with 24 up and coming pros to create an 18-month synergy to  improve tennis professionals and coaches. The USTA headquarters in Orlando recently opened in January 2017 with 100 tennis courts: clay, European red clay, hard and indoors.
  • In 2019 the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) recognized me as having reached the 30-year membership milestone.
