Frank Adams was the first African American President of the Colorado Tennis Association, and Intermountain Tennis Association USTA Section, leading the way for future Black Colorado and sectional leaders. As Chair of the Colorado and ITA Minority Partiipation Committee, Frank recruited and mentored Blacks to volunteer on USTA committees. The current President of the CTA is African American and the current Vice President (next President) of the ITA is African American. This took hard work, courage and perseverance by Frank. He has run Player Development programs such as Star Search in underserved communities for over 20 years. These lessons are given at a minimum fee or for free. Most of the kids are Black, Hispanic or Asian.
Twenty-five years ago, Frank was one of the leaders to introduce Black tennis and teaching programs for Black children at Denver City Park. He has taught (reduced costs or free and on Frank's days off from work) children's tennis at City Park for over 20 years. Taught many Black junior players. His student, Jessika Mozia, became the first Black player to win the Colorado High School State number 1 Singles Championship in 2010. She won again in 2012. Jessika played tennis on scholarship for the University of Minnesota.
Frank learned to play tennis in an NJTL program in Philadelphia. He was a microbiologist in the Air Force, and then in private industry, but felt that teaching tennis was his true calling. Frank has dedicated his life to teaching and growing tennis. He volunteers more than any person I know to benefit childtren and adults in undersrved communities. Frank is on the court teaching seven days each week. He has taught thousands of students, and hundereds of instructors to trach tennis through USPTR programs. Frank has run free tennis clinics year after year to raise to raise money for Asian tennis, Black tennis Special Olympics, cancer research and more. He is also nationally known as a wheelchair tennis instructor, traveling outside of Colorado to teach people how to teach wheelchair players. Twenty years ago, he opened, designed all the tennis programs, and became the head pro at the Highlands Ranch Community Association Club, a recreation center with six indoor and ten outdoor courts.
